Spin On

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Opening a link to a story about the ‘bipartisan salute’ paid to Ted Kennedy upon his death, I found a real knee-slapper in the first paragraph, although somehow I don’t think that the Washington correspondent for the Financial Times really intended it to be funny:

Edward Kennedy’s death on Wednesday triggered a rare moment of bipartisan unity in Washington at the end of a bitterly rancorous month in which the “Lion of the Senate’s” lifelong goal of achieving universal healthcare had been called un-American by rightwing critics.

Read that last phrase again.

Nevermind the fact that the debate has seen the SPEAKER OF THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES calling PRIVATE CITIZENS “Un-American”, the author has to portray Kennedy’s party (and more importantly, the party of Obama) as being wronged. Reading on, that’s really what this article is about. Not memorializing the passing of a major (if controversial) figure in the U.S. Senate, but writing a dismal political piece about the health care bill, and more importantly, Barack Obama:

It is unclear whether the outpourings for Mr Kennedy, whose almost half-century tenure made him the third-longest-serving senator, will improve Mr Obama’s ability to sell healthcare reform to an increasingly sceptical public.

This article is the epitome of what modern ‘journalism’ has become. They have taken the death of an important American  — one that was a major ally of Mr. Obama — and cheapened it by making it a paltry article about current politics, mixed in a little bit of idol worship of President Obama, and topped it all off with a major distortion of facts intended as a cheap political hit on the President’s opponents. It’s really quite disgusting.

And they wonder why there is such dissatisfaction with the media in the country.

Rest in peace, Senator Kennedy. I can’t say I agreed with you most of the time, but you stood up for what you believed in. May we all find the courage to do the same.

Political Analysis

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

My dad sent me a link to a very good political analysis of the current situation of the Obama administration. It certainly seems to ring true, and it explains exactly what Obama’s advisors don’t seem to understand — why everything seems to be coming apart for him right now.

You can tell that the interviewers in this video really got a very different interview than they expected. It’s like they think that government really WOULDN’T be concerned about possible invasions of their airspace.

Well, I’ve got to hand it to Charles Johnson over at LGF — he hit two good videos in one day. The first one was pretty amusing, but given my particular twisted and demented tastes, this one was perfect. So perfect, in fact, that I feel the need to repost it here. I mean, how often do you get to watch… to watch… um… this:

Today’s Brain Twister

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

I was thinking about various meanings of words, and thought of the homophones ‘plain’ and ‘plane.’ From there it was only a short step to:
“Use the plane to plane the plain plane on the plane sitting on the plain.”

If you say it quicky, you sound slightly like a rapper.

A Fishy Report

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

As some of you may have seen already, the White House is on the lookout for “fishy” statements about health care reform. This has prompted some people guilty of thoughtcrime against the President’s initiatives to bravely turn themselves in. I (as the model citizen I am) have been on the lookout for similar offenses against the sainted words of our Dear Leader, and I believe I have found one. I herewith append my denunciation:

Dear White House,
I wish to report something fishy that I have seen about the health care
debate. I found a video of someone purporting to be President Obama and
saying all kinds of things about how he supports “a single-payer health
care plan” and “a universal health care plan.” This is OBVIOUSLY far
different than what the President has repeatedly said he wants during
the recent debates on the topic. The link to the video is here:

I thought you would want to know so you can expose this man (whoever he
is) as a liar.
Good luck finding and correcting him!

Backlash

There’s an interesting article here about public reaction in town hall forums with Democrats during the August recess. Obviously, the Democrats can’t admit that their health care ‘reform’ is not only unpopular, but probably a hugely expensive bad idea. The UPenn political scientist that they finally get around to quoting three-quarters of the way through the article makes a particularly good point — Obama has been hugely successful so far in using his most vocal supporters in packing his events to provide a seemingly positive response. The fact that these supporters haven’t been showing up in sufficient numbers to balance the public response in these town hall meetings should be a major worry for the Democrats at this point. Another point that unnamed “communications experts” made in the article — that it’s a bad idea to “demonize the protesters” — goes unexplained. I think I can fill in the blanks, however: if you demonize the people who are angry about this, you’re demonizing the 41% of the public that “Strongly Opposes” the passage of this plan. This is not a good idea politically, not only in the electoral sphere, but because it makes perfectly clear that the Democrats want to force this bill through, regardless of what Republicans want. Their unwillingness to compromise in any way with the Repubublicans in writing the bill already shows this, but this is a far more visual exhibit.

I’m not a huge fan of MSNBC (having to watch it in the faculty room during lunch for a semester showed me just how tilted its coverage was), but this story is actually pretty good. I’m very impressed with Richard Engel in general — I remember watching coverage of him during the “shock and awe” phase of the war in Iraq.

I just realized how long it has been since I posted anything here. I’ve been keeping pretty busy, and I still have a couple of projects going (along with trying to find a job), but I may start posting more again soon.
