One of the reasons I haven’t been posting as much lately is because I’m thoroughly sick of politics. I seem to go through phases of it. Things like this thoroughly disgust me. Bush supporting a realistic immigration policy angers the Republicans, so they threaten support of the soldiers in Iraq. That’s not trying to do the right thing, it’s cheap and petty politics. Maybe the current batch of Republicans don’t deserve to be re-elected.
Then again, if one takes a look at the Democrats, things aren’t looking too promising either. Obama is portraying all opposition to his platform as being a political trick by the “Christian Right,” and pretending that there isn’t legitimate christian opposition to things he supports, like abortion or gay marriage. The Democrats are playing the grasping unprincipled politics game as well.
Then again, the Democrats and Republicans both are looking sane by Comrade Putin’s standards: apparently the Vietnam war (in which somewhere between 3 and 5 million people were killed) is far, far worse than Soviet history. Just ignore the people killed during the Russian Revolution and Civil War, executed by Lenin, and the 20 million or so Russians who died under Stalin’s rule alone. And helping to train the German Nazi armies. And the unprovoked Finnish war. And the tens (or possibly hundreds) of thousands of citizens of other countries who were needlessly executed by the Red Army. And Russia’s collusion with Nazi Germany to divide Poland. And the gulag.
I’d better stop there. I’m thoroughly disgusted, and I’m not even into the 1950s yet.
