Iranian Dissent

There has been a new statement of dissent from within Iran. This particular dissenter called for the United States to overthrow the Iranian regime. You might think this wasn’t overly suprising: Iranians are by no means all fond of their government. However, the source of this particular statement did seem odd: it came from Hossein Khomeini, grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini, who was responsible for the present government’s rise to power in 1979.
What makes him so interested in overthrowing the current government? He claims a burning desire for freedom (which may well be the case), but also mentioned what he would do if he “came to power in Iran.” Is he trying to line things up so that he can come out on top in case of a revolution? Quite likely. The interesting question that is raised by that, however, is why does he feel that he needs to prepare himself for this now? Does he expect a change in government?
It’s nice to know that at least one power-hungry would-be leader in the Middle East is (at least nominally) on the side of individual freedom, and is willing to look to the United States to get it. I’m not sure if we should back him specifically, but if he wants to start a rebellion, I hope Bush is smart enough to support it.
