Want A Headache?

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

If you want to read an interesting article that will give you a headache, take a look at this one. Relativity always confuses me. It always comes so close to making sense, and then at the last minute it veers off somewhere unexpected.

Teaching History

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Today I was teaching history. One of the questions I was discussing with the students was this one, which I was reading aloud:
“#7. Spiritual movements came in various forms, including some with strong leaders/doctrines that were accused of mind control. What were the two most prominent examples of this era?”
Without missing a beat (and for reasons known only to himself), one student chimed in, “Herpes!”

BBC Screws One Up

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

I must say, this story is absolutely priceless. The video is even better, particularly the look of panic on the face of the cabbie. This really shows a different side of TV news — the fact that this man could perform a more coherent interview than some professional TV guests really says something about what television companies spend their money on.
DEFINITELY something worth watching, but read the story first!

Iran Threatens War?

Friday, May 12th, 2006

I had seen some discussion of this statement in Ahmadinejad’s letter to President Bush, but this is probably the best coverage I’ve seen of it so far. It’s definitely something that’s being broadly ignored by most of the press.

Internet Downloading And The Movie Industry

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

This article describes a new deal made by Warner Brothers that is definitely a revolutionary first step for internet distribution of video. It’s good to see that a movie company is finally making use of technology that others have labeled as being for illegal uses. I may disagree with some of the particulars of the agreement and Warner Bros. implementation of it, but it’s good to know that they’re taking steps toward a more peaceful coexistance.

Today’s Overheard Quote

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

I have no idea what this one was about, but today in class I heard this one:
“It’s completely antithetical to everything that modern Christianity stands for. I think it’s HILARIOUS.”

Maybe it’s just me, but this guy seems to really have an enjoyable life.

Tapping The Naked Jamaican Guy

Friday, May 5th, 2006

An illicit drink in the British navy is sometimes referred to as “tapping the admiral,” which refers to Admiral Nelson, who was brought back to England in a barrel of alcohol after dying at sea. However, I don’t know if builders in Hungary are going to begin using the phrase “tapping the naked Jamaican guy” after recent events there.
It’s quite possible that this is an urban legend, but either way, it’s definitely a good read.
