We had a pretty spectacular thunderstorm here last night. I’m guessing upwards of 50 mph wind gusts here (and I’m guessing the winds were higher elsewhere in the greater metropolitan Shippensburg area, judging by the damage) and lightning striking at least once a second for at least 20 minutes straight. One of my students told me about how she stood in her kitchen and watched a bolt of lightning come in the window and hit the refrigerator. Power was out (outside of Shippensburg at least) for the better part of 3 hours most places, and in some places more like 5 1/2. I’m definitely tired from being up in the middle of the night last night — normally I sleep right through storms, but I couldn’t through this one — and all my students today were as well. Today would be a good day for a region-wide nap.

Pat Robertson
Friday, May 26th, 2006Once again, Pat Robertson is saying stupid stuff again, although this time he’s only making himself look like an idiot. This is a big improvement, as usually the publicized things that he says reflect poorly on Christians as a group. One interesting thing though (and someone with more experience with weight machines than me will have to help me out on this one… if you look at the picture, he doesn’t seem to have his feet placed in such a position that he’d be able to effectively lift it. Every time I’ve ever used a leg-press machine, I had to put my feet farther down on the plate to allow me to push my legs straight out, instead of putting me at an awkward angle (like he seems to be in in the picture). The other funny thing is that the props that you use to hold the weights up while loading them and getting ready to lift seem to be set, so that Mr. Robertson isn’t bearing any weight whatsoever.
Who’s The Nazi Now?
Wednesday, May 24th, 2006For years now, we’ve been hearing Democrats calling Republicans Nazis. Now we come to this story in which the Iranian government makes a move that the Nazis actually DID. Will we hear an outcry against Iran and Ahmadinejad by the Democrats, urging us to do something to stop them?
We’ll see, but I doubt it.
UPDATE 5/20/06 4.33PM: The story is now in doubt, although nobody seems to be quite sure what’s up with it. Naturally, those Democrats that I was referring to before are calling the whole thing “Neo-con propaganda”.
UPDATE 5/24/06 5.50PM: The newspaper has retracted the story. Seems that creating clothing badges is the ONLY thing un-Nazi about Iran — the threatening Israel, conspiracy theories about Jews, distaste for open discourse, bizarre religious beliefs, threatening and interfering in the politics of neighboring countries… the list goes on.

Iranian Saber Rattling
Wednesday, May 24th, 2006The Iranians are busy rattling the saber by testing their Shihab-3 missile. Coincidentally enough, this was immediately before Bush met with Olmert to discuss what to do about Iran. Luckily, according to some analysts, the missile has only been lightly tested. The recent test was not completely successful, either, so there’s some hope that any used during war would malfunction. Besides that, Israel has anti-missile missiles which should provide some defense. However, there are about 26 countries within range of the Shihab-3. A number of US interests are included in the range as well, particularly in Iraq and around the Persian Gulf.
News Vs Reality
Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006Interesting post at Power Line today. This just confirms what I’ve been saying about the media for… well, years now.
Another By Victor Davis Hanson
Friday, May 19th, 2006Victor Davis Hanson (also known as VDH for short) has written another excellent article on American foreign policy, particularly in regards to the middle east and the current spate of anti-Americanism. Definitely worth a read.
I’m getting more and more concerned about the dynamics I’m beginning to see functioning in the middle east. I may write more about this later, but it’s too much for right now. Just read VDH’s op ed.

Government Energy Policy
Thursday, May 18th, 2006In case you were wondering, not even the House of Representatives cares about energy policy. We can’t even open up more natural gas wells, just because some of our wonderful representatives from California and Florida are more interested in the appearance of a few beaches. Mind you, this is blocking the expansion of drilling in prettymuch ANY US coastal waters, not just off of the shores of places with tourism-based economies.
Rep. Adam Putnam of Florida considers the move to allow more oil drilling to be “a grievous assault on Florida and other (coastal) states.” Perhaps someone should point out to Mr. Putnam that if nobody can afford gas, nobody can VISIT his (coastal) state. Perhaps we should also introduce the flip side of the coin — isn’t it unfairly benefitting coastal states for them to be the only ones to get the coveted economic boost of government-funded major ports and naval bases? Perhaps we should build a naval base in Nebraska, just to be sure that we treat coastal and interior states EXACTLY the same.
This sort of politics really infuriates me. Most likely every single member of Congress has advocated energy independence for the United States, but when the opportunity comes up to take a step towards that, they’re more interested in playing politics than they are in solving an actual problem.
In any event, here is the roll call vote for the proposal to allow coastal drilling for oil, and here is the vote for KEEPING the present prohibitions on natural gas drilling.
Feel free to use the information against the relevant members of Congress.
