Physics

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

I’m sticking this under philosophy because I don’t trust my background in physics enough to thing this is completely accurate, but I thought of something today while watching a documentary on Steven Hawking, and thought I should write it down.
Black holes are singularities — essentially the atomic roach motel (matter checks in, but it doesn’t check out). The big bang that started the whole shebang was also a singularity. I know gravity messes with the localized passage of time, so is it possible that our entire universe is merely the inside of a black hole? In which case, where do our black holes go?
If anybody has any input in this, feel free to leave a comment, even if it’s just on the philosophical nature of the topic and not the physics side.

Medicine And Government

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

There’s an interesting article here about various world leaders and their medical problems. Definitely quite interesting — Idi Amin, the Shah, Brezhnev, and others show up and are examined.
Via Dr. Crippen, whose blog is also worth a good read, particularly if you’re interested in medicine (and particularly the NHS system in Britain).

Truth From Iraq

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

There’s an interesting post on Power Line today discussing media coverage v. reality in Iraq. Worth a read, as do the articles the post link to.

Random Conversation

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

I walked past a couple people talking in the hall during lunch today, just in time to hear one of them (a kid named Joe) say, “…you know, just like Mr. Barner.”
“What about me?”
“Oh, you know. You’re gorgeous, but you have an awful personality.”
“Thanks, Joe. You make me feel a lot better about myself.”

I’m quite taken with the religion of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Google Censorship USA?

Monday, March 13th, 2006

There are questions now about whether Google is censoring sites it doesn’t like. I’m not sure if this is really the case. My site has fallen off of Google for several days at a time before. I’d say this is probably a technical glitch, as I’m not really big enough to be a target for the type of naughtiness that Red Square is suspicious of, but who knows. Interesting reading anyhow.

Making A Difference

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

Somebody has come up with an innovative way to make a difference. I must say that his idea was unique. I’m really not sure what they’d be able to charge him with — he wasn’t littering, he was only moving litter that other people had created. It’s kinda disgusting, but he definitely managed to make his point and raise awareness of the issue.

Google Video

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

I’ve been having all sorts of fun with Google video lately. I want to be able to do this.

Search Engine Fun

Monday, March 6th, 2006

I’m VERY curious as to why not one but two people reached my website by searching for “animosity between crows and squirrels.”
Jane Fonda urinal sticker” I understand. “Idioms kettle of worms” amuses me, but I can at least somewhat figure out. “Midlle east store” seems logcial. I do mkae the occasional error in typography. And I must say I’m proud to have my site come up for “explosive triggering device.”

Various other entertaining search strings (with numbers of times following, if more than one):
“perchlorate fish heads”
“gun-type barner” (2)
“lignite deposits of ukraine”
“syzygy war and terror boards”
“the british are weird”
“monkey on febreze commercials”
“cartoons with trolls” (4)
“banalization”
“erin kelly counterintelligence”
“board of revision of taxes mechanicsburg pa”
“2005 article on french linguistics”
“slime mold beetle”
“noises heard underground russia”
“pranks with viagra”
“ahhhhhhh waaaaaaaa schiavo speaks”
“photographs pius x11 death”
“rummel-bulska”
“al qaeda other tasks 2/12/05″
“kh-55 as-15 iran”
“solzhenitsyn tsunami tidal wave”
“howard bloom tsunami pennsylvania”

As you can tell, all of the search engines seem to be insane.

Katrina Revealed

Monday, March 6th, 2006

There’s an interesting article here about the Popular Mechanics article that absolutely took apart the mass media coverage of Hurricane Katrina (and more particularly, the aftermath).
Via my dad.
