Stories like this one worry me. “Holocaust denier… anti-Semitic and racist” he may be, but free speech is free speech. Denial of the holocaust may be stupid, racist, and historically laughable, but arresting people who say dumb things is similarly stupid. To quote the t-shirt one of my students wears to class, “Stupidity isn’t a crime, so you’re free to go.”
The danger of legal recourse against those who deny the holocaust is that you are simply reinforcing their idea that there is a massive conspiracy to silence people who disagree. To imprison them for their use of free speech simply reinforces their beliefs and helps them convince others.
So not only is restraining free speech in this way morally wrong, but it’s stupid as well.
