Well, it’s been a nasty week for the Gulf Coast. Political blame is getting pointed everywhere, though the media seems to be focusing on all of it that is getting pointed at Bush. I haven’t been watching much CNN or television news period, but from what I’ve seen it seems to be amplifying the tragedy side of the disaster at the expense of actual coverage of the relief response. I applaud the willingness of the media to put themselves in danger to put a face on the suffering of the people affected by the hurricane, but viewers were left with the impression that absolutely nothing was being done to help them, and that Bush was doing nothing at all. The reality was far different — Bush was actually the one who managed to get them to issue a mandatory evacuation in the first place. It’s good to see the media taking proactive steps in covering stuff like this, but I wish the coverage was more balanced — maybe embedding reporters with the National Guard from the moment they’re called up?
