This is a truly disturbing picture.
Caption: “Xuan Minh, 3, looks out from his bed at the Tu Du Hospital in Ho Chi Min city on Friday March 25,2005, suffering from what is believed to be the effects of the jungle defoliant Agent Orange, used heavily in the region by the U.S. armed forces during the Vietnam War.”

Disturbing
Wednesday, April 27th, 2005Pretty Cool
Tuesday, April 26th, 2005I’ve always wanted to do filmmaking, but never thought I could make an entire movie in a warehouse. Ignore the advertisements for Apple software and equipment in the article — I wouldn’t do it on that stuff.

BBC As Political Force
Saturday, April 23rd, 2005It’s good to see that the US is not the only country with media problems. Giving microphones to hecklers in a crowd, particularly those heckling the leader of a party which has publicly criticized the funding of the BBC, is not a good thing — even if it IS for a documentary on heckling. Do you think they similarly equipped conservative hecklers at a labor meeting?
I don’t either.
Basic Civics
Friday, April 22nd, 2005It’s too bad that Sen. Charles Schumer wasn’t in the 25 minute demonstration lesson I taught this morning about the constitutional basis of Congress. He might have found out that the Vice-President casting the tie-breaking vote in the senate is not White House “interfer[ence] with the Senate to reduce checks and balances,” but is actually permitted by the Constitution (Article I, Section 3, Clause 4 to be precise). It’s quite amusing to watch opponents of the ‘nuclear option’ of changing internal Senate rules try to claim that the filibuster is necessary to sustain the constitution, when quite obviously the constitution doesn’t even mention it.
Life From Rotten Eggs
Friday, April 22nd, 2005This is absolutely fascinating. If they can manage to induce hibernation in humans, it really has many good medical benefits. Imagine first responders keeping equipment in their ambulance to suspend injured people — you’d be able to keep them going far longer, and likely increase survival rates. Same with battlefield conditions. And hey, there’s always the space trips to distant stars in suspended animation!
Gore’s Mistake
Thursday, April 21st, 2005If Al Gore had behaved like this during the 2000 election, he might well have won it. This sounds like a political debate I’m sorry to have missed.
