Syrian troops are finally leaving parts of Lebanon. In an echo of doubts about Iraq, Syrian sources are saying that the election may be illegitimate without Syrian help. I think it’s safe to say that if the Syrian-backed President hadn’t reappointed the Syrian-backed Prime Minister in a blatantly obstructionist move, there wouldn’t be any question about that. It seems that Syria may well try to illegitimize the election now, just to keep their finger in things in Lebanon. I don’t think the Lebanese people will take that sitting down.
