There are some fascinating color photos from the first World War here. I don’t know what it is about adding color that just makes things seem more real — black and white photos are allright, but you just don’t quite get the sense that things were just like they might be today: no sense of the reality of the scene you are viewing, or even of the humanity of the people involved. It’s too bad that color photographs took until 1903 to be invented.
