I can’t say I’m particularly enamored of the cartoons, but the troll getting flamed makes it worth it. Via Hugh Hewitt, via a completely unrelated link from LGF.

Lebanon
Wednesday, February 16th, 2005Chrenkoff has some insightful analysis on Lebanon and Syria. Despite complications with Iran, I do think it’s definitely worth supporting Lebanon’s opposition on this one. Another Middle Eastern democracy would be a wonderful thing, particularly bordering Israel as Lebanon does. At this point (with Iran verging on the nuclear and instability in Palestinian territories) Israel can use as much help as they can get. While a democratic Lebanon or a democratic Iraq likely won’t support Israel directly, they’re at least likely not to be antagonistic.
Is There Life on Mars?
Wednesday, February 16th, 2005NASA is starting to think that there might actually be some life on Mars. By the sound of things, this wouldn’t be much more than deep submartian bacteria that thrives in cold water (not having a sizeable moon, Mars doesn’t have strong tidal forces ginning up volcanic heat), but it’s still considerably more than we previously thought existed there, and may indicate that life is more widespread than we thought.
Scarred For Life

More on Iran
Wednesday, February 16th, 2005Iran is threatening to shoot down US drones, and at the same time claiming to have been attacked. I have NO clue what’s going on — we’ll just have to wait and see.
The Plot Thickens
Wednesday, February 16th, 2005This certainly makes things a bit more complicated. An almost nuclear Iran siding with Syria is likely to decrease the likelihood of forceful US action against Syria.
The Scandal That Wouldn’t Die
Wednesday, February 16th, 2005You’d think that eventually this scandal would end, but foot-dragging by various parties involved is making it take forever.

Syria Reprimanded
Wednesday, February 16th, 2005The United States has issued a demarche and withdrawn its ambassador to Syria over the whole ‘assassinating a former Lebanese Prime Minister’ thing. DEBKAfile claims to know who was behind the attack, and why. It sounds quite plausible, and the US presumably agrees with the determination, judging by the actions against Syria.
The whole incident really boosts public sympathy for the Lebanese political opposition (of which Hariri was a prime player) and will likely really shake up the status quo in the region. I rather suspected that Syria would be next on the list of countries we would focus our attention on as a nation, but I didn’t think Syria was stupid enough to do something major like this to instigate it. It’s about time we stood up for Lebanon, and the popular opposition to the Syrian puppet regime inspired by this action may be an opportunity for the US to help along a Ukraine-like seizure of power. Unfortunately, the Syrians aren’t as likely to leave the process alone as Russia was with the Ukraine. Threat of US action should keep them in line, however. If nothing else we could point out that we have well over 100,000 US troops right next door to Syria, and are ready to use them.
