I thought I had posted this story earlier, but looking through my archives, I don’t seem to have done so. I can’t remember now why; either I
1) took it for granted that a professor would say something that stupid,
b) thought the story was fishy at the time, or
fourthly- read it and really didn’t feel like bothering to type something interesting to go with it at the time. I’d like to say it was the second answer, but it was much more likely the first or the final one. Anyhow, INDC Journal has a brief review of the story, along with the new development — the professor’s response.

The Other Side of the Coin
Wednesday, February 9th, 2005Buy Some Earplugs…
Wednesday, February 9th, 2005…’Cause there’s going to be many shrill people screaming about “PROPAGANDA!” when this gets out. The problem is, that’s why this is necessary. With propagandistic outlets like Al Jazeera and CBS doing most of the coverage of the military as it is, the Pentagon probably felt that it was time for the American soldier’s perspective to be shown.
I bet it’ll be more interesting than C-SPAN.
Rice in ‘08?
Wednesday, February 9th, 2005It’s good to see that I’m not the only one who thinks Rice should run for president in 2008. Morris leaves out a crucial point that would be salient in discussing a run for the presidency by Condi Rice. It would put the final nail in the coffin of the “Republicans hate women and black people” myth — even if she were to lose to Hillary, the Democrats would never be credibly able again to label Republicans as opposed to those two groups.
Bush is certainly doing nothing to impede her progress towards this goal, even if he’s not actively wearing a campaign button. Moving her to the bureaucracy-heavy and internationalist-friendly State Department will boost her credibility on management skills and foreign relations.
Moving speculatively even farther into the future, a decisive win by Rice in 2008 would spark serious (and I mean REALLY serious this time, not just artificial) soul-searching by the Democratic party. If Republicans can successfully splinter off the big factions that compose the modern Democratic party, it can be destroyed in its present form — not so that Republicans can run unopposed, but so that the Democrats can be remade into a viable and healthy party. Our system of government works best when both parties are healthy and aren’t run by radical people like… oh, I don’t know, Howard Dean.
Bonus points for Condi if she puts Lieberman on the ticket as VP.

A Bad Sign
Wednesday, February 9th, 2005Is it me, or is it a bad sign if someone succeeds at embezzling about one percent of your (small) organization’s budget every year for “three or four years”? And now said individual is ‘missing,’ supposedly dead, and with something like 3 UN passports and millions in cash?
“According to one State Department cable, the legal adviser, Iwona Rummel-Bulska, recently told American diplomats in Geneva that ‘while bad,’ the weather agency’s internal procedures were ‘not the worst seen in the U.N. family of organizations.’”
And people wonder why I think the UN is a worthless organization.
