A brief addition to what I posted earlier: Democrats are actually less interested in stopping WMD proliferation than they were before Sept. 11, 2001. By a significant margin.
Before Sept. 11, Democrats were more in favor of counter-proliferation than Republicans were. The percent rating for 'liberals' on the topic is down 25% in the past three years.

Wednesday, August 18th, 2004I find this to be very significant. According to this report terrorism is not the first priority for those who consider themselves to be Democrats. For some reason, U.S. jobs are rated as a higher priority — despite an unemployment level right around what is considered to be normal. Stopping WMD proliferation does not even appear in the top five list for Democrats, despite being arguably the most important foreign policy goal of this present time.
This ties in with something I saw earlier today as well. I was watching the end of Charlie Rose and Charlie was interviewing Gary Hart. Hart said that jobs should be considered part of homeland security, because if you don't have a job, you're not 'secure.' This is stupid. It's called “homeland security” because it is about ensuring the security of the homeland. It is not called “whiny liberal ideal security.” If we went around saying that everything that benefits the individual is part of the security of the nation…
Well, we all know what happened to the USSR.
